Topography of Memory (Rust).  2016, Silk, staples.

A recollection of stapling up the hem of my school uniform.

Enduring the sharp bite of metal upon skin.

Picking up needle and thread to make reparation.

The catalyst of my relationship with the power of making.

The bewildering discovery that this is not my memory.

It is my mother’s, her stories from boarding school.

A series of questions arise.

How critical are truth and fact when remembering?

What effect do adopted narratives have upon identity?

Can the fictions of memory enrich our unique experience of self?

This work chooses to embrace the latter.
